Josh Charles is a well-rounded actor who has a couple of decades of acting under his belt on stage, film, and TV. This Baltimore-born celebrity who has acted in LA and NYC, and frequently travels internationally has no intention of straying from his roots. He is Baltimore bred and crab fed! Every chance he has to get away for the weekend, he heads to his favorite vacation retreat with his wife and dog Zeus – Oxford Maryland. Before I give all of the exciting details about this waterfront haven, let’s take a closer look at the man, the actor, the husband, and the proud Baltimorean: Josh Charles.

Josh Charles Actor

Josh Charles stars in the hit TV drama The Good Wife (2009), along with co-star Julianna Margulies as Alicia Florrick. Their partnership at Stern, Lockhart & Gardner law firm has viewers wondering week after week if their professional relationship will ever turn into a love connection. The show has proven quite successful, reaching their 100th episode in November 2013 (Josh Charles IMDB).

Josh Charles started in as a child actor in the late 80s, getting his big break at age 17 in the 1988 musical-comedy film Hairspray and 1989 film Dead Poets Society. He worked with the best in the biz at an early age: Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society, and Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry in Hairspray. Josh still remains the best of friends with Dead Poets Society co-star Ethan Hawke (Josh Charles IMDB).

Baltimore to New Greenwich

Josh Charles was born in Baltimore, Maryland and attended Baltimore School for the Arts. Due to his acting career, he has had to reside outside Maryland from 17 years old and onward to live near his various film and TV projects. Much of his early career was based in Los Angeles, where he maintained an apartment. It wasn’t until late 2005 that Josh Charles decided to switch coasts and buy his first home in New Greenwich, New York – a 2000 square feet loft. In an interview with Chicago Tribune, Charles called his recently purchased, unfurnished space, “one big fat open space that’s slightly over-whelming.” When he was asked what is in his refrigerator he said: “fridge is empty except for a six-pack of beer, vitamin water and Orangina.”

Marriage Made in Manhattan

The Good Wife star Josh Charles married his longtime girlfriend Sophie Flack, who is also a celebrity in her own right. She is a retired NYC ballerina since 2009 and the author of the New York best seller Bunheads, which was made into a TV series by ABC Family network. The couple tied the knot on September 6, 2013 at a Manhattan home with just a small ceremony, and dinner afterwards at upscale restaurant Il Cantinori in Greenwich Village (Daily Mail UK).

To complete their family, they immediately acquired a puppy named Zeus. By the way, anyone that follows Josh Charles Twitter account knows – though Josh Charles is a star on The Good Wife, his dog Zeus takes center stage on his Twitter account.

More than Maryland Roots

Josh Charles didn’t leave Baltimore, find his celebrity, and forget all about his hometown. In the case of Josh Charles, you can take the celebrity out of Maryland, but you can’t take Maryland out of the celebrity.
Charles stays heavily connected with the state, even though he must live elsewhere for work. He visits frequently, especially to attend games of his two favorite sports teams, Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles. He even has a life size poster of Ray Lewis of the Ravens in his NYC apartment. It was his grand prize for winning the inaugural celebrity NFL Fantasy Football league in 2005. Josh Charles clearly remains deeply connected with Maryland. He has many friends in the state and is frequently interviewed by the Baltimore Sun. The Baltimore born and breed actor has no intention from straying from his roots. Charles is clearly a die-hard Baltimore sports fan, but when asked what else he loved about Baltimore, he said “I enjoy a good diner, and Baltimore has some for sure. Jimmy’s in Fells Point and Wyman Park Restaurant are two of my favorites. I also love Sabatino’s in Little Italy” (Foodandwine.com).

Josh Charles Oxford Maryland

Oxford Maryland suits Josh Charles and his wife Sarah perfectly for a weekend away. It is Charles’ home state and it reminds his wife of her family’s visits to Cape Cod when growing up. The couple just can’t get enough of the cozy waterfront locale, the vibe, the ten ounce beers, the rockfish, and, oh yeah . . . the crabs! The view is stunning and watching the sun set over the water is an amazing floor show. In an interview with Chicago Tribune, Sarah said: “Oxford is a charming small town on the eastern shore of Maryland. It’s an easy train ride to Baltimore and then a scenic drive across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and then we’re in heaven — heaven with the best crabs on the planet!”
