Michael Phelps is undoubtedly the world’s greatest swimmer and, widely acclaimed, the greatest Olympic athlete in history. The moment he earned his fourth gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics, he became the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time. Phelps trained and began his athletic career in Maryland, and continues to proudly hang his hat in the Old Line State.

Michael Phelps Maryland Roots

Michael Phelps was born in Baltimore and began training and competing as a swimmer at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club at the age of seven. Phelps’ swimming continued to improve as he grew taller and stronger. His amazing swimming and his passionate, competitive spirit eventually caught the eye of Coach Bob Bauman; this set him on the fast track to compete on a national level and a global “Olympic” level at a very young age. Just after beginning Towson High School, while finding school lockers and homerooms were the greatest concerns of most kids his age, Phelps was in the midst of launching his athletic career by joining the U.S. National B Team. He secured a place on the U.S. Olympic Swim Team after blowing away the competition at the Olympic trials the very next year, at age 15. Phelps’ first trip to the Olympics in 2000 (Sydney) introduced the Baltimore born-and-bred swimmer to the world. By the 2004 Olympics in Athens, the famous Marylander became a household name with eight medal wins (six gold and two silver).

Michael Phelps Olympic Champion

Michael Phelps has been one of the most anticipated and watched athletes at the summer Olympics for over a decade, frequently competing in the 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, butterfly, and freestyle relay. At the 2003 Barcelona world championships, winning three gold and two silver medals and breaking five world records paved the way for his amazing Olympic career (Career Top End Sports). The following year, Phelps brought home his first Olympic medal (gold medal) at the Athens 2004 Olympics in the 400m individual medley completion. Michael Phelps has earned a total of 22 medals during his Olympic career from 2000 to 2012: 18 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze (Olympic.org). He showed amazing success at the Athens 2004 and London 2012 Olympic Games, but Bejing 2008 proved to be especially golden; Phelps completed a perfect run with eight gold medals in eight events, breaking Mark Spitz’s 1972 record of seven at the Munich Olympics. The four gold medals he brought home from London 2012 poised Phelps to surpass former Russian gymnast Larisa Latynina as the most decorated Olympian of all time (Baltimore.about.com).
